Art, Activism, and Expression: Celebrating Hollenbeck Palms Resident Artist Deborah Krall

At Hollenbeck Palms, creativity does not fade with age, it flourishes. For resident Deborah Krall, art has always been more than a pastime. It is a form of expression, a reflection of values, and a powerful way to stay connected to the world. Last fall, Deborah opened her latest exhibit, RESIST / PERSIST, a vibrant collection of mixed media collages created right here at Hollenbeck. The resident-led show has been on display since then and will continue through October 31, 2025, giving everyone in the community plenty of time to experience her work and the message behind.

A Lifetime of Creative and Civic Engagement

Deborah Krall is an octogenarian artist, educator, and activist whose work bridges the personal and the political. A member of the feminist art collective Mother Art since 1980, she has spent decades merging creativity with advocacy. Her exhibit features intricate, symmetrical pieces made from campaign pins collected over the years, each one layered with purpose and passion.

In her own words:

“As a politically curious and active woman, teacher, artist, and collector of small, shiny objects, I have acquired bags full of campaign pins of varying sizes, colors, and sentiments. About 15 years ago, I began using this material in collages. In this series, RESIST / PERSIST, I wallow in color, texture, and symmetry. The more I produced these collages, the more people offered me their collections of campaign pins. These pins support causes such as public schools, unions, reproductive freedom, and peace. I have been attracted to art all my life and have been a member of Mother Art, a feminist art collective, since 1980.”

The artwork invites viewers to reflect on movements that shape our world. Each piece carries energy and meaning, built from decades of history and activism.

A Resident-Led Showcase That Sparks Conversation

This resident-organized exhibit is yet another example of the initiative and spirit found throughout the Hollenbeck community. From the installation to the opening reception, Deborah’s fellow residents rallied in support—some helping to curate the event, others simply pausing in the hallway to admire and discuss each piece. The art show draws people in, encourages connection, and highlights the creativity that continues to grow with experience.

Visitors and residents alike have found themselves moved, not only by the stunning visual compositions, but by the message behind them. Themes of equity, education, and resistance shine through, sparking meaningful conversations about personal identity and collective responsibility.
