Hollenbeck Palms
Nutrition insights and tips for healthy aging
Living a longer life means more than just counting the years – it is about infusing those years with energy, enthusiasm and purpose.
At Hollenbeck Palms, we are committed to understanding and implementing the best practices in senior care, continuously engaging with experts who share their insights to help us enhance the lives of our residents.
We host educational events. For example, we recently presented a panel discussion titled “The True Nature of Your Fourth Age.” This event focused on positive aging and featured invaluable insights from Kathryn McGrew, PhD, Professor Emerita of Gerontology; Corinne Karr, a psychotherapist specializing in holistic approaches for older adults and Linda Chiavaroli, a Hollenbeck Palms resident and trustee. The discussion explored critical aspects of retirement planning and living, especially navigating life transitions for older adults, with a special emphasis on nutrition and brain health.
Speaking of nutrition and its tie to brain health, here are some tips for seniors.
Geriatric nutrition and brain health
Nutrition plays a vital role in supporting cognitive function and preventing memory decline. Certain foods might significantly benefit brain health – and incorporating them into daily diets may make a substantial difference.
Let’s explore six foods that could enhance brain health that you could incorporate into your daily diet.
- Blueberries
Blueberries can enhance memory and focus when consumed by older adults. Their high antioxidant content, particularly anthocyanins, provides anti-inflammatory benefits that support brain function and help improve memory.
- Mixed nuts
Nuts, rich in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, contribute to better heart health and reduced risk of type 2 diabetes, both of which are linked to improved cognitive function. They also contain α-linolenic acid, an essential fatty acid crucial for brain health.
- Dark chocolate
Dark chocolate with at least 70% cocoa is a potent source of antioxidants that boost brain function. It lowers cortisol levels, which reduces stress, and contains flavonoids and methylxanthines, which enhance cognitive performance.
- Coffee
Black coffee, high in caffeine, enhances brain performance through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Polyphenols in coffee promote brain health by improving memory and concentration, and reducing cognitive decline.
- Fish
Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), fish supports brain health. Its antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties help lower harmful cytokine levels, reducing inflammation in the body.
- Magnesium-rich foods
Magnesium supports overall body function and brain health, potentially preventing and treating neurological disorders like depression and Alzheimer’s disease. Foods rich in magnesium include dark chocolate, avocados, tofu and legumes.
Despite occasional memory lapses, no one should ever be deterred from pursuing their hobbies and passions. Aging may bring some challenges, but with the right support and care, we can continue to enjoy the activities we love.
Gut health, influenced by diet, impacts brain health through the gut-brain axis. Eating nutrient-rich foods, such as the ones mentioned above, supports both physical and cognitive well-being.
Staying well-hydrated is also crucial for bodily functions, including brain health. Older adults should drink enough water, even if they don’t feel thirsty.
You can continue to feel great for a long time to come through hydrating, eating healthy, and sharing special moments with the ones you love to be around.
